The Bones of the Kuhina Nui

hawaiireaders-the-bones-cover1In his first Kohala Coast Mystery/Thriller Michael Herr begins the story of the Pono Family. For generations the women of the Pono Family have guarded the secret hiding place of the iwi, the bones, of Queen Ka'ahumanu. The Queen was the favorite wife of King Kamehameha, but never conceived. Her remains were stolen from the Royal Mausoleum in Nu'uanu Valley, prepared according to the old ways and then taken to the Big Island to be reburied.

The current matriarch of the Pono Family, Haunani Pono, has decided that she must pass her responsibilities on to one of her four daughters. But which one? And how will the others react to her decision.

(This) is a GREAT mystery story . . . but more importantly it is culturally correct. Many stories written about Hawaii . . . make our legends and stories seem trite tho they are very important to our culture and beliefs.

One Response to “The Bones of the Kuhina Nui”

  1. Michael A. Herr Says:

    Aloha everyone,

I was asked recently which of my books is my favorite. My response was "the next one". While that is true, I always look forward to my next book more than I look back at my last book, this book "The Bones of the Kuhina Nui" will always hold a special place for me. It was my first serious book, my first mystery/thriller, my start of the Kohala Coast series. I had fun with the research for this book. I had fun writing it. I was thrilled when Cindy Conklin gave me permission to use her artwork for the cover. . . gratis! If I could write it over again one of the few changes I would make is that I would title it "The Old Queen's Bones", so that it would lead into my series better. But at the time I didn't know this was going to become a series.

This is also the first book of mine that I've had to go to a second printing. Gee, I wish I had to do that with my other books.

    Mahalo for reading,

    Mike Herr
