Aloha all,
I'm currently reading "Bolohead Row", primarily because I skipped it. I loved "The Tattoo" and "The Queen of Tears" (lots of Korean in my wife's side of the family). I'm sorry to say that I was not as impressed with "Mililani Mauka". I had to force myself through that book and just couldn't get as wrapped up in it as I was by Chris' other books. I do think Chris McKinney is an excellent writer and I look forward to his next book.

Aloha,
If you want to read a touching memoir of growing up in Kapa'a, Kaua'i in the 30's to 50's, read: Rainbows Over Kapa'a by my husband, Bill Fernandez.
Bill, a Kamehameha alum, tells the story of how his small town developed out of marshlands the plantation owners did not want, leaving it for those who finished their contract labor. First, the Chinese came to grow rice and buy small plots of land (pretty rare in the late 1800's), followed by others. The town grew into a multi-racial, multi-cultural town where everyone worked together to succeed.
Bill's parents, both half Hawaiian and poorly educated, built the largest movie theater in all of the islands in 1939.
Read about the impact of WW 2, 15,000 soldiers on the island and how he and his friends made their own canoes, toys and surfboards (from old ironing boards).
The book is filled with photos, some dating to the late 1800s.
The book is published by a start-up publisher, Central Pacific Media, and is available in Borders on Kaua'i and soon in all of the Borders stores (dist. by BookLines). Bill's author talks on Kaua'i have been very well received.
Check out his website: wfernandez.com.
Hope you enjoy it! E Malama Pono....Judie Fernandez

Why is Hawaii a laggard in tech innovation? We are ranked #5 in the nation in Defense research dollars per capita and #18 in University research, yet our innovation companies are few and far between, and our venture capital industry can hardly find anything worth investing in. Why is that? The answer is in the book "Hardcore Inventing" by Hawaii inventor Dr. Robert Yonover, featured at a book signing at Barnes & Noble this past weekend. The problem is not that Hawaii entrepreneurs are not creative enough or smart enough. Rather, it is because the business model that most people in Hawaii use to try to bring an innovation to market is COMPLETELY WRONG! As explained in detail by Dr. Yonover, the innovation business model that works best is by LICENSING your intellectual property

I am reading Shark ialogues by Kiana Davenport. It is a beautiful book. The characters come alive on the page and the scenery is real and lovely. All of the senses are satisfied. It includes love and loss. It is an unforgetable book that I will read over and over and recommend to everyone.

The name is Shark Dialogues. My typing is very bad and my eye sight is not perfect so I make many mistakes but I read and I write every day. Maryanne
