A DASH of Aloha: A Healthy Hawai‘i Regional Cuisine & Lifestyle Book

A DASH of Aloha by Kapiolani Community College

A DASH of Aloha by Kapiolani Community College

A DASH of Aloha: Healthy Hawai‘i Cuisine and Lifestyle by Kapi‘olani Community College (KCC) is a book about eating, not dieting. This unique guide introduces the easy-to-use DASH (Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension) eating and activity plan, which teaches readers how to lead a healthy lifestyle combining good eating habits and regular physical activity.

Ron Takahashi, chairperson of the Culinary Arts Department at KCC, explains, “A DASH of Aloha is about taking the simplest steps to incorporate healthful rules of thumb into your daily routine, with the long-term goal of achieving a healthier lifestyle. The recipes are based on local tastes, and emphasize eating Island-grown, fresh ingredients, simply prepared to get the greatest benefits.”

Seventy simple, local-style recipes are presented with nutritional notes and fact charts.  Those who find themselves challenged by cooking for family members with special dietary needs, or simply want to eat healthier themselves, will find a wealth of tasty ideas here.

And because a healthy lifestyle requires more than just cooking right, A DASH of Aloha includes chapters to educate readers on nutrition and exercise.  Special attention is also devoted to the needs of kupuna. Daniel Leung, the book’s editor and an educational specialist with KCC’s Culinary Arts Department, views it as not just a cookbook, but an “‘idea book’ to help the average person with really practical advice and simple local-style recipes for every meal.”
