A Concise History of the Hawaiian Islands

by Dr. Phil Barnes
A decade after its initial publication, A Concise History of the Hawaiian Islands has been updated with new information that brings Hawai’i’s story into the new millennium. Momentous events, notably the election of Hawai‘i-born Barack Obama to the U.S. presidency, focused more worldwide attention on the 50th state as it reached its 50th birthday. Hawai‘i’s colorful history, written in the informal style that students found so appealing in Dr. Barnes’ classes, comes to life through interesting anecdotes and new, compelling pictures. The author touches upon major events and personalities that shaped the Hawai‘i we know today: from the geologic forces that formed the Island chain; to the first human landfall; through the sovereignty movement of the late 1990’s; into the dawn of the 21st century.
“Readers, both residents and visitors, will quickly gain a comprehensive understanding of Hawai‘i, and a desire to learn more about the Aloha State. This book is the beginning of a wonderful, intriguing journey into the past. Hawai‘i is unlike any other state in the union. Those who seek to understand it will find its story of hope, hardship and happiness transcends age and race.”

This little book covers the subject of Hawaii's history with broad brush strokes in an easily readable style. From the geological formation of the islands through the challenges of the 21st century, readers can discover the major events and people that have shaped the Hawaii we live in and love today. The "Further Reading" page lists many other books to further broaden the reader's knowledge. Great effort was made to update Hawaiian words to the current spelling and punctuation. New images were added, including the monarchs of the Hawaiian kingdom and also modern figures of importance. Comments are welcome.
