In honor of the upcoming National Bookstore Day (Saturday, Nov. 7), let’s vote for the best features of bookstores in Hawaii. Just speak out in the reply box below.
For real books you can hold in your hands, just the way God meant them to be, support your favorite bookstores this week and throughout the year.
1. Best independent bookstore … support your independent bookstores!
2. Best bookstore for bargain books … look for good buys!
3. Best bookstore food and coffee … munchies and java jive!
4. Best bookstore for books about Hawaii … read about the islands!
5. Best bookstore for sitting and reading … I think I’ll stay here all afternoon!
6. Best bookstore for book signings and speakers … meet the author!
7. Best bookstore for kids’ books … read me a story!
8. Best bookstore hours … open when you’re open!
9. Best bookstore for friendly customer service ... good service with a smile!
10. Best all-around bookstore … you’re my favorite!

Native Books is my favorite independent bookstore - what a treasure trove! If they had coffee (or 'awa?!?) they would be perfect. Also a great place for author signings.
Most romantic - and pretty much all the other categories - Borders Ward. My husband and I go there often for the nightcap of our dates, pull some books, get some coffee, and enjoy late into the night.

I'll vote for Bill's Bookmobile and Book Off at Shirokiya in Honolulu. Sad to see Kohala Bookstore closed on Big Island this year. On Kauai (where I live) there's Talk Story. Unfortunately, we just lost The Tin Can used bookstore in Kapaa (I think they are relocating to Oahu). I'll vote for Watermark Publishing for on-line book sales (I got in on their incredible 10 books for $10 deal this month).

Independent: BookEnds or Basically Books (Hilo). Yes, too bad about Kohala Books. Bargain: Bestsellers for overstock, various Friends of the Library for used (Rob, thanks for mentioning Book Off--have found some good buys there). Food/coffee: Covenant Books, also like B&N’s baked goodies. About Hawaii: Borders Ward, Borders Kahului, UH Bookstore. Sitting/reading: better to go to a library or head on home. Signings: B&N Kahala; Speakers: Native Books. Kid’s books: any B&N. Hours: any Borders. Friendly: Borders Windward Mall; BookEnds. All-around: Borders Ward. Romantic: Kokee Museum shop--it means we’re on a getaway trip!
