Independent: BookEnds or Basically Books (Hilo). Yes, too bad about Kohala Books. Bargain: Bestsellers for overstock, various Friends of the Library for used (Rob, thanks for mentioning Book Off--have found some good buys there). Food/coffee: Covenant Books, also like B&N’s baked goodies. About Hawaii: Borders Ward, Borders Kahului, UH Bookstore. Sitting/reading: better to go to a library or head on home. Signings: B&N Kahala; Speakers: Native Books. Kid’s books: any B&N. Hours: any Borders. Friendly: Borders Windward Mall; BookEnds. All-around: Borders Ward. Romantic: Kokee Museum shop--it means we’re on a getaway trip!

I'll vote for Bill's Bookmobile and Book Off at Shirokiya in Honolulu. Sad to see Kohala Bookstore closed on Big Island this year. On Kauai (where I live) there's Talk Story. Unfortunately, we just lost The Tin Can used bookstore in Kapaa (I think they are relocating to Oahu). I'll vote for Watermark Publishing for on-line book sales (I got in on their incredible 10 books for $10 deal this month).

Native Books is my favorite independent bookstore - what a treasure trove! If they had coffee (or 'awa?!?) they would be perfect. Also a great place for author signings.

Most romantic - and pretty much all the other categories - Borders Ward. My husband and I go there often for the nightcap of our dates, pull some books, get some coffee, and enjoy late into the night.
