More Sounds of Music Thoughts:

Boyd's huge Kailua singing group may be related to half that population of that corner of the world...expect many fans to come. Hand out tissues if the Queen Emma group performs, tears will surely flow. Thanks to you and Ms. Lynn for doing this.

Roger: Some Singing Sensation Suggestions:
Hawaiian Civic Clubs (they compete with each other) especially Manu Boyd-led groups, Prince Kuhio Club, Nola Nahula's beautiful youths--Na Leo Kuhoiokahi--Honolulu Men's Chorus. The tiny Queen Emma group has some of the most moving singers--old-time, local flavor: sweet, poignant, and bring you to your feet joy.

Start with some of these and they'll lead to more. Local Sweet Adelines last year were tasty musical morsels. Good going with this expanded activity, the auditorium is such a nice place in which to relax, too, Maestro.

Last time out the Hawaii Book and Music Festival introduced a "Hawaii Chorus Showcase," coordinated by Shari Lynn. We had a half-dozen major choral groups performing in the Mission Memorial Auditorium. We hope to double the number of groups for HBMF2010 (May 15-16), with Shari Lynn again in charge. Suggestions most welcome.

Thanks, Roger for Bringing Festive Words and Music:

“How’s it feel to be part of a hot new trend,” I asked 78-year-old George Kekoolani. “Being in harmony has always been big in Hawaii,” he replied in a crystal-clear tenor.

I’d read “Pitch Perfect,” Mickey Rapkin’s new book by about a cappella singing. Once a collegiate subculture with members as far a field as Cole Porter and Osama bin Laden, singing without instrumental accompaniment is a fast-growing phenomenon, with more than 1,200 on-campus groups. In Hawaii, churches, clubs, and schools have such singing groups.

His glee club sang to George in the hospital, he mouthed the words to every song he’d sung for over half a century. His daughter Tina danced a bedside hula.

Beautiful! I have to admit I've never read his books so now must do so.

But speaking of breakouts - what do you think of the book, The Secret? I believe it started as a DVD and then went to print? Have other books been created in that way? And what of books that start out as blogs, e.g. the blog on Julia Child? It seems there are many new ways to create breakouts.
