Pearl Harbor Child: A Child's View of Pearl Harbor--from Attack to Peace

Pearl Harbor Child: A Child's View of Pearl Harbor--from Attack to Peace by Dorinda Makanaonalani Stagner Nicholson

There has been little written for young people about what it was like to be a child in Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.  Nicholson, born in Hawaii, the child of a Hawaiian mother and a Caucasian father combines her personal story with the history of the time. The photo-essay design in black-and-white includes family snapshots as well as official documents and news pictures. The core of the book is her on-the-spot account of the bombing, temporary evacuation, and war years. Most moving is her child's viewpoint: Nicholson is frank that it was exciting and fun at times, even as she remembers the terror, the tragic mistakes made by friendly fire, and the suffering. 1. Dorinda Makanaonalani Nicholson Says:

    Aloha:

As the author of Pearl Harbor Child and as we approach the 68th anniversary of the Dec. 7th attack, my thoughts go back to that time and what it was like to be child of the Harbor. My hope is to share with the keiki of Hawaii a child's view of airplanes flying so low over our house on Pearl City Peninsula we could see the pilot's goggles. Do you know that everyone had to carry their gas mask with them everywhere, even kids. School was closed from December until February. My school, Sacred Hearts Convent was turned into a military hospital. I hope you will enjoy reading and hearing more about Hawaii's history in wartime. Mahalo and aloha, Dorinda
