Akua Hawai‘i: Hawaiian Gods and Their Stories

akua-hawaiiAkua Hawai‘i: Hawaiian Gods and Their Stories is an introduction to over 30 of Hawai‘i’s gods for young readers and adults alike. Hawaiian gods possess wonderous abilities, with humble mortals invoking their names to call upon their superhuman powers for help and guidance. Many of the gods have multiple forms and are able to dwell in any of the different regions that combine to form the Hawaiian archipelago. Their mo‘olelo are branded upon the sacred places where they accomplished their glorious feats. They are the phenomenal spectacles of the natural environment - fresh water, thunder, clouds, and volcanic eruptions. In the days of old, to earn their favor was to be victorious in battle or successful in harvest. To incur their wrath meant severe hardship.

Wonderfully written by Kimo Armitage and ilustrated by Solomon Enos, Akua Hawai‘i offers simple stories of creation, duty, love, and hope that provide not only a better understanding of the gods, but also demonstrate important lessons about life that still remain true today.

Kimo Armitage is a life-long student of Hawaiian culture. He has authored many best-selling books, poetry, and lyrics. He continues to be inspired by the outstanding literature of his Hawaiian ancestors.

Solomon Enos has exhibited at over twenty venues and has completed illustrations for five books. He continues to thrive and gain inspiration from his father, Eric Enos, and the ‘aina of his upbringing, Makaha.
