Outrigger Canoes of Bali and Madura, Indonesia
Centuries of evolution have produced Indonesian outrigger canoes that are superbly functional and beautifully crafted. These canoes are fashioned of natural materials and because of their flexible design, can withstand the continual punishment of wind and waves.
This authoritative volume discusses the origins and construction of these canoes, how they were rigged and sailed, and their significance to the hundreds and thousands of Indonesians that rely on these craft as a way of life.
Author Adrian Horridge became interested in the sailing craft of Indonesia in 1975, when he spent three months as chief scientist aboard a research ship in the Moluccas. His growing fascination with the maritime cultures of the region has drawn him back to Indonesia every year since then where he has visited remote fishing villages and interviewed canoe builders.
