Mammals in Hawai‘i

0-930897-10-2This new and completely revised edition of Dr. Tomlich's classic 1969 volume is a considerably expanded and comprehensive study of all the mammal species found in our island state.

Ecological, behavioral, and historical information is presented in a lucid and readable style, making this book as much a delight for the casual reader as an essential sourcebook for scientific study. The suthor's intense involvement and long experience in the islands is expressed in the detailed treatment of each species and the exhaustive bibliography.

The marine animals are extensively covered, reflecting the extraordinary growth of interest in the whales, dolphins, and seals that live in Hawaiian waters. Equally fascinating are the accounts of the diverse mammals introduced to the islands by humans over the last 1,500 years. Such animals as the Wild Pig, Pacific Rat, and Indian Mongoose continue to have great impact on the survival of native animals and plants and on the human population.

P. Quentin Tomich has been employd as an Animal Ecologist by the State of Hawaii Department of Health. His research has focused on the role of small-mammal populations in the transmission of human diseases but over the years he has compiled information on all of the mammal speices that are known in Hawai‘i or the seas surrounding this isolated island chain.
